A plague on both your houses!

On a rainy day off with a massive headache, I made the decision to watch Baz Luhrmann's greatest accomplishment (and might I add, rather cynically, the only decent film he made besides perhaps Strictly Ballroom)Romeo + Juliet. I really like this version, perhaps it's because it was one of my favourites from my early teens, perhaps because Leo is ridiculous or maybe it is just a sweet film; irrespective of this, the soundtrack is definitely a trip back into my teenage years, and I love it. So many pop-rock classics that made me think I was so cool for listening to them. The soundtrack was released in Australia and in that year it went platinum five times. I remember listening to it a lot, and I'm sure many other Australian's my age would remember doing much the same.
So, in that vein, I'm going to put some tracks up from it. Not in any attempt to be original or to even try to showoff any musical knowledge I might have acquired over the years, but mostly because of nostalgia (a common theme in this blog, might I add). Ohh, and it features Radiohead.

The Wannadies - You and Me:

Radiohead - Exit Music (for a film)

Everclear - Local God

Love Food - The Cardigans

Talk Show Host - Radiohead

Everybody's Free (To Feel Good) - Quindon Tarver

When Doves Cry - Quindon Tarver

"To live alone is the fate of all great souls." Arthur Schopenhauer

"You were not hunting me." Chan Marshall

I'm not sure if I have blogged solely about my love for Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, before. Cat Power is ridiculously beautiful music. I have loved her for a long time now, and even though her more recent work is not as raw as her previous, her voice is still undeniably stunning. This kind of music is exactly what keeps me continuously interested in the music industry. I started listening to her again the other day, and I realised, again, just how poweful I think she is. In the 90s and early 2000s she was an alcoholic, and was infamously difficult to watch perform, and often broke down sobbing instead of being able to finish. Although this perhaps is not something to admire, I do admmire the woman's strength and ability to pull herself through, and there is a noticeable shift in her musical direction since overcoming. I saw her live in 2008, and although I was excited, I was also skeptical that it might be a dissapointment, considering all her bad press from previous shows.... she rocked.
Let's have a listen!

PS. It helps that she is stunning. Karl Lagerfeld has used her for Chanel before. Woah.

Ross Capicchioni

My old friend linked me to this the other day....

I would say it is probably one of the most incredible stories I've ever heard. If you have 15 minutes, use it to watch this, you cannot regret it.

"As usual, there is a great woman behind every idiot." John Lennon

I grew up listening to The Beatles. Bless my parents for having both an interest in music, and great musical taste. I love The Beatles, and have done for as long as I can remember, their timeless music is still amongst my favourite songs today. Here's some of the greatest ones.

Let It Be:

Come Together:

I Am The Walrus:

Real Love:

Here Comes the Sun:

Blackbird:

Hey Jude:

Music doesn't sound like this anymore.

"We all travel thousands of miles just to watch TV and check in to somewhere with all the comforts of home, and you gotta ask yourself, what is the point of that?" Richard

I finished reading The Beach by Alex Garland today. I used to love the film version; with the paradise, love and of course Leonardo. But I kind of hate the film now because it romanticizes what is, in theory, a fucked up intense book and creates this idea of paradise but barely focuses on the paradox. The book is remarkable. It was one of those amazing bits of writing where it remains in your head long after you put it down. I am tempted to flick to the start and go at it again, but I have more books waiting me, if uni would only settle down.

Regardless, I still think Danny Boyle is a great director, and I felt somewhat sacreligious making such negative connotations on what was once my favourite film. So, I'll conclude with one final statement: sick soundtrack.

Dario G Feat. Vanessa Quinones - Voices
You might be more familiar with Dario G's Sunchyme. A gay anythem and quite possibly one of the most recognizable film clips of the 90s.

Underworld - 8 Ball:

Leftfield - Snakeblood:

Faithless - Woozy:

Moby - Porcelain:
