The Fifty States Project

Remember Sufjan Stevens? His concept was crazy. And he gave up on it. Creating an album for every state in America. FIFTY ALBUMS. Fifty concept albums. He lived in the chosen state and wrote about it, and it's history. He did: Michigan and Illinois. And then stopped. He was later interviewed saying it was a gimmick.
His more recent tracks I haven't loved as much as his older ones. I thought he was really gifted, and so many of his songs sounded so different from the previous. He's one talented man. He's some picks of the bunch:

Concerning the UFO flights near Highland, Illinois:

John Wayne Gacy Jr:

For the Widows in Paradise, for the Fatherless in Ypsilanti:

Seven Swans:

All the Trees of the Field will Clap their Hands:

Sick

Antlers

Silberman's back, yo! It's not as heartwrenching as Hospice was, but you can't really continue along those heartbreak albums all the time unless your Elliott Smith - whose eventual demise was pretty bleak. Anyway, it sounds like Radiohead and Wild Beast together. I like it. It's different. It's pretty cool.
The latest album is called Burst Apart. I love his voice, it's quite unique. Well, these are a couple of tracks from it. Youtube has a great selection of some live SXSW tracks of theirs. They rocked Laneway earlier this year - so it's recommended.

Dirty Beaches

Sounds like a mix between The Velvet Underground and Morrisey type voice. It's dope. Alex Zhang Hungtai is the brains behind it. He's from Taiwan originally. It's just cool/unique. You might like it, you might hate it.

Art Rock is back.

IKONIKA

Ikonika plays this weekend at Barsoma. I think it'll be a good time!

10 beans. Decent.

Blues

Great weekend. Great tracks:

Osibisa - Sunshine Day
(AKA happiest track ever recorded)

Dub-reggae group The Red Eyes:

If words could describe how insane these guys were live... Woah
Gold Coast group A French Butler Called Smith

And heard this in the car.... not at the festival. But was still pretty happy, ha ha!

Edit

We got shown this in a class the other day. It is the most remarkable editing of a trailer - his attempt was to make it look Sofia Coppola-esqu indie flick. Amazing.

And Ferris Bueller is date-able character.

Terrible Tuesdays

Just became a whole lot better if you wake up and put this track on.

Julio Bashmore - Batty Knee Dance

So ripping.

Agree

Could not agree more with any other written word: Vice's review of Deadmau5. Although I find Vice somewhat pretentious hipster chat - they do raise some valid points in a lot of what they say; although they often take a long time to get to a point, which is more often than not not really a mind boggling idea.
But this record review of Deadmau5's most recent release could not have more truth:

Am I the only one mystified by this guy’s success? Is it because he wears a silly bogus-Murakami mask? Or maybe it’s just that the mask makes him the only Eurotrash DJ anyone can identify? You sure can’t pick him out by sounds alone. I see no other possible explanation; it’s inconceivable that anyone finds this music genuinely compelling. Also, he spells his name with a 5.

Particularly the end sentence.
Because - he does spell his name with a 5. Why?

I was going to write some more - but I just burnt the hell out of my hand on pasta sauce.

So I leave with this. This is how men should dress:

And this;

True Love Waits

This song is just absolutely incredible/amazing/wow/touching/moving.

I wish there was more tracks in the world that did what this song does to me. I love it.

I've been thrashing this one too much as well:

PS. How amazing does Iceland look? I really want to go there. CHOIR is a national sport. That's awesome. That sounds like my kind of place.

And here's Michael Pitt again. Woah.

Sunday Night

Thanks again, Jimmy. This one is gorgeous.
Bit of a lame video someone made though. Ha ha.

Jamie Woon's album is quite beautiful.

Definitely what I SHOULD be working towards:

Goodbye, for now.

Beastie Boys

Susan Sarandon, Elijah Wood, Will Ferrell, Jack Black, Seth Rogen, Jason Schwartzman, John C. Reilly, Will Arnett, and Danny McBride

This is the best news.
I am seriously stoked. What a cast. What a band. Heck yes.

Yewwwwwwwwwwwww

Saturdays

Are not good days to try and study.

I have found this out the hard way. Trying to study.

It's Always Sunny...

...In Philadelphia.

I cannot, for the life of me, stop watching this show.

Dennis: I hate listening to people's dreams. It is like flipping through a stack of photographs. If I'm not in any of them and nobody is having sex, I just don't care.

Dennis: Hi. I'm a recovering crack head. This is my retarded sister that I take care of. I'd like some welfare, please.

B.E.E.

On a recent long-haul flight, I read Less Than Zero. It was (besides his latest Imperial Bedrooms), only Bret Easton Ellis novel I had not read. His writing is phenomenal, the way that he can make one momentous, and disturbing, event seem like a small action - with no foreseeable greater consequences. It was an amazing read. But I do not recommend it for those who are looking for a 'light' read. Although it isn't difficult to read from the writing itself, the content is both shocking, and disturbing.
I watched the film adaptation of it. It totally sucked. Do not waste your time.

I thought this quote from him was fantastic:
"I think THE HILLS is the greatest show I have ever seen in my life," he says, sincerely. "It is a modern masterpiece. I think that ADAM DeVILLO is a mad genius. He creates it and controls it perfectly. I'm holding off on Season 4 right now. I started watching a bit of it, but I'm waiting until the DVD comes out because I want to see it all so beautifully mastered. Even if you download the show there is that irritating MTV logo in the corner. It doesn't work for me that way. It has to be on a big screen with the sound right up. It blows me away...I'm sorry, but whoever invented HEIDI MONTAG and SPENCER PRATT are just...nothing matches it. I've never see L.A. look more beautiful in a work of art. There are no movies that are as beautiful as that."

Thursday Evening

I was on a crowded train yesterday and heard someone listening to music really loudly in their headphones. I originally thought it was Battles; which put me in a great mood. I realised it was actually Marilyn Manson's Beautiful People. But forgive me for confusing the intros of these two tracks:

Battles - Atlas

Marilyn Manson - Beautiful People

Pretty similar.

Battles release a new album this year. It's been four long years since their last. They tear it up. It's awesome.

Clips

Saturday night spent in - putting off writing a literature review - because if I'm going to be in on a Saturday night, a lit review is not very good compensation. These clips are,. though. More chilled out vibes: selections off Fat Cat Records artists.

Silje Nes - Crystals
This clip is just adorable, and was just before she was going to open for Mice Parade. I am a massive Mice Parade fan, it's just really lovely tunes

Mice Parade - Swing:

Icelandic sensations
Múm - Green Grass of Tunnel

An instant classic, and one of the most visually stimulating live bands I've seen
Animal Collective - Fireworks:
(reminds me of a boy)

I also think this image of them is amazing

Sticking to the theme
Panda Bear - Comfy in Nautica

Literature review now.
