Stuff White People Like

So there's a publication called Stuff White People Like. If you happened to stumble accidentally across this blog, and were unaware, I am Caucasian - meaning this was directed to people such as myself, I went into it cynically (I AM DIFFERENT!) but soon realised, cynicism is a supposed 'white' 'quality' (I put them in two separate inverted commas for good reason.

Let's take a journey through what this author assumes white people like, and let's see how much of it I personally like.

David Cross, "alternative comedian" as it was put. Guilty. I love him, and have read his book "I Drink for a Reason" probably too many times.

A list of albums that white people have on their iPod, and whether I do or not:

- Arcade Fire: Funeral... I have it. And love it.
- The Beatles: Let it Be... Affirmative. 2/2.
- Bob Dylan: Blonde on Blonde... Yep.
- Neutral Milk Hotel: In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.... I do enjoy this album.
- The Velvet Underground: The Velvet Underground and Nico... I am now ashamed to say I have always listed this as one of my favourite albums.
- Belle and Sebastian: Tigermilk... I don't have this specific album on my ipod, but I do have a few of the tracks. Let's call that a half mark?
- The Clash: London Calling... I used to really enjoy The Clash, not so much anymore. But I still have it...
- Joanna Newsom: Ys... I don't have this one... I have never really liked her that much.
- Pavement: Slanted and Enchanted... Unfortunately I never jumped on the Pavement bandwagon, so this is a negative.
- Pixies: Doolittle... I have it. I have a collector's boxset addition of their entire back catalogue, and I went to the Doolittle tour. Um. Yeah. I love this album. FuuUck. (Sidenote: I did never think it was original to like it)
- A Tribe Called Quest: Midnight Marauders.... Yeah I fucking love that album so much it's sickening.

Final score: 9.5/11.

So, music wise... White taste?

Arrested Development
is supposedly loved by white people. I love that show. It says that white people also rarely admit to watching TV, but I think TV is the greatest.

The Wire.
I hate the Wire. It was way to long and boring. Gotya there!

Musical Comedy.
I actually despise musical comedy, it makes my skin crawl.

Standing still at concerts.
I understand what angle he's coming from, but I do dance. A lot. And not well (definitely a white thing).

Expensive Sandwiches.
I eat $9 sandwiches and enjoy them.

Singer-Songwriters.
Definitely, definitely guilty of this.

Wes Anderson Movies.
Yeeeeppppp... I love them.

The Simpsons.

Well, I don't like it, but I also don't have a lot of it.



Anyway, I did their final checklist of 150 things and my results were:

94/150
Putting myself in the supposed 70 - 80% white category.

Predictability isn't necessarily that bad.
